History is simply what's behind us.

About This Quote

In the words of Shakespeare, "History is simply what's behind us." If we could look beyond the immediate present and take in the past, we would be able to see the whole story of humanity. There's no way we can understand our own lives without understanding human history. I’m not saying it’s impossible to know our own history. We can learn about it from books, television, film, or the internet.

But there’s nothing like experiencing life for ourselves. It’s like trying to understand how something works by reading about it instead of trying it out yourself.
